Juicy Watermelon at Grand Bay Alabama

My husband loves to indulge in enjoyable recollection of his memorable childhood. He mentioned that when he was young, a peddler of fruits would go by his neighborhood shouting "Grand Bay Watermelon" and he will always remember the yell that sounded like a song to his ears LOL. Summer time in Mississippi is fun with so many festivities. I also remember that hubby and I would go to the back road from Ocean Springs Mississippi to Grand Bay Alabama just to buy watermelon and other fruits. We bought huge and juicy watermelons and it was my first time to see a yellow watermelon. One time, my sister in law was with us and she bought fruits and vegetables. Do you like watermelon?

Huge Farm Land

Land is a good asset and for a long term investment, it is actually good because you can pass it on to your family and for the next generation to come. We have few acres of land back home but, the location is steep so; we planted coconut trees and bamboos. Either way, it still good to own lands because in the near future, it will become "money". The Philippines is tropical so; we can plant fruit trees and earn money still. But, here in the US and Alabama in particular, our friend who owns this huge land (as far as you can see and beyond) it's different. He do not till the land himself. He had a renter who made this land into a cotton farm and peanut farm. This is part of the farm land which he maintains daily. This is actually the backyard of their property where he had an animal farm: goats, chickens and 2 mules. The part of the backyard owned by our friend has this huge pond located at the middle. The animals love to hang out in there. The whole vicinity is fenced in but, once in a while there are cayotes that wanders and jump over the fence. They are after the goats. Our friend said that there are big rattle snakes in the area. That is the reason he keeps it clean. These are cotton farm. Well, I thought cottons came from big trees only. But, here ... it's bushes.

Farm in Alabama

When we had our road trip to Alabama, I was so excited. Hubby has a friend in High School and they have been communicating through emails and phone calls. They are up to date about their latest achievement in life. Oh I am talking about family, children, career moves and what they do most of their life now. High School had been 4 decades ago or more but, it was amazing that they remember all the crazy things they did in High School.Yep! I was excited because Alabama is a pretty laid-back place just like Mississippi where you can see people loves eating Southern food, enjoys family activities, attend the church and has the passion to work to provide the family. The thought of traveling to a dirt road was on my mind. It was not the case, gone are those days just like what we saw in the movies. Anyway, the road to our friends' place is long, narrow and winding! Our GPS cannot even locate the place and of course, Internet signal was limited. We were able to reach his beautiful and new constructed home and at the back of his big house was the farmland with animals. He got almost a hundred goats and the amazing part, he had names to all of them. Most of the goats are pregnant and in few weeks, kids will be running in the big yard. They love their farm animals and they do not butcher them because they treat them as babies. They sells them but, not eat them.Aside from goats, they have donkeys and chickens also. I was asking the wife if they had fun having a roasted chicken all the time and I see horror in her eyes. LOL, sorry! Yeah! They do not eat their own pets because they are family as what she says. I keep teasing her but, she was kind enough to explain and she even retorted that they are not that hungry enough to eat their pets. We all burst out laughing! That night, the four of us were reminiscing the men's high school bully days. They are the bullies at that time but, that was 4 decades ago and so different from the bullies we had nowadays. They do not hurt people in those days and up to this time, they remain friends. If you live in the country, people know each other and their generation. We had a good laugh that night and we sleep at midnight. We had a wonderful time!

Living on a Farm

Our friend lives on a farm in Alabama and he got a huge shed where he stored his farm equipments. I lost count as to how many equipments he got but, he has all that he needs to use for the farm.Their house is located in a farm land and a bit distant from the road. We sleep good for the night. They have no wifi in the house but, they use DSL. I was checking on their goat farm which is located at the huge area at the back of their house. I was really careful because there are rattle snakes in the area. I was on my way at the back of the house when Lo and Behold, I saw a snake. I was really scared and I ran away from it. When I look back, the snake never moves. So, I took a picture and zoom it and showed it to our friend. He said it was not a poisonous snake. It eats rats in the farm.
Our friend has three big sheds and it looks like a "man cave" which is full of gadgets for the farm. If there is a wifi and cable in the area. I think I can live here. But, I do not know if I can manage a farm land. That is too much of a work to maintain!

House in a Remote Place

Last Monday, we arrived in our friend's house in Alabama. I was expecting a dirt road but, from the main street to their house, it was all paved with concrete. From their mailbox which is a couple hundred feet to their house, they paved it with concrete at their own expense. I would say, that's a lot of money. See the picture below? You can't even see the mailbox on the main road. I enjoyed being there a lot because it reminds me of the province of my granny's when I was young. Anyway, their place is far and so many streets to turn which our GPS can't even locate. We pass by a big warehouse for cotton and peanuts because in that area, long stretch of cotton farms are endless. So, we arrived here at five in the afternoon while our friend was feeding the animals. They got a nice house and it's really huge for two occupants. I started to take photos of the surroundings and when I was about to get finish, I saw this big snake on the pathway at the back of the house. I was really running away from it and it never moves. So, I slowly take the picture of the snake and return to the front porch of the house. Whewww!.
Our friend told me that he do not kill this snake because it helps him eradicate the rats in his property. He only kill rattle snakes and he got plenty in his property. After knowing that, I quit going out the yard alone. Dang! They look like sticks on the ground, right?

Road Trips

Since hubby and I have nothing holding us back from doing something in any day, road trip is our favorite activity. I can't tell you how many times we passed this road but, since I love this area, I can't help myself but take a snap over and over again. Here we are as we head eastbound interstate 10 in Mobile, Alabama approaching the Wallace Tunnel. Mobile is the third most populous city in the Southern US state of Alabama. This location is nearby Mobile River and the central Gulf Coast. The tall building that you see here is the RSA Battle House Tower which is the tallest building in Alabama. Did you know that it is the tallest building in the Gulf Coast outside of Houston? Beside it that looks like a rectangular shape is RSABankTrust Building. The exciting experience for me is driving towards Wallace Tunnel. This tunnel is used in many movies. If you are traveling routing the Gulf Coast scenic area, you can't miss this tunnel.
This tunnel crosses beneath the Mobile River. I always have a shallow happiness so, by driving this tunnel, it gives me an exciting feeling.
In the middle part of the tunnel, GPS and radio channels will quit working. Look at this light, it's pretty amazing right? I have no traumatic experience in a place like this so, I had fun memories. Of course, if you experienced a disaster such as the movie Daylight where in people were trapped and the water starts rising, that would be scary huh! God forbids!
There's nothing to worry when you pass the Wallace Tunnel. It's just a short time and you will see this light! This way, we are heading home to Florida. If you want to travel to Mobile, Alabama do not forget to drop by at Battleship Park.

Bankhead Tunnel in Alabama

This is the tunnel in Mobile, Alabama from Government Street which emerges to the Battleship Parkway. When we travel towards Florida, we saw this tunnel but, pass by the George Wallace Tunnel. This area is gorgeous and of course, you will see the tall buildings. The Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding Company is also just nearby. When you reached the middle of this tunnel along I-10, you will have no electronic signal but, it would only lasts a minute.
It is pretty safe because the big trucks that carry gas and petroleums have their own route and they are not allowed to pass by the tunnel.
I really have a funny but nice feeling everytime we pass here. I sure would love to explore the battleship area in the future.
Oh by the way, the Bankhead Tunnel was used by Steven Spielberg's movie called Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Yap, it is an alien movie.

Welcome Centers of Florida and Alabama

Just for fun, I always manage to take pictures of any landmark of the places we visited. For the month of April, we decided to visit our cousin in Gulf Breeze. The place is so amazing because of the white sand beaches that they have. You will see this nice US Navy plane in Florida welcome center.

This is Pensacola Beach and before we park our car, my camera kept rollin' already. I took this picture where the function stage for live entertainment area located. If they have free concerts or live shows for the beach goers, it will be right here.

The benches with in the entertainment area facing the stage and the beach too. On this spring season, the beach is super crowded with tourists and locals alike.

Our first stop is Alabama Welcome Center. Actually, we just traveled for 9 hours exactly and we traveled three states already namely: Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. We see some relatives, dine out and go back to Mississippi. There are so many places and sights to see in Alabama but, I will explore it soon. As of now, we just came here to dine out and drive down to Gulf Breeze for lunch before we go back home.

Expect to see more pictures, see you next time.

Road Trip to Pensacola

These pictures were taken last April when we are on our way to Pensacola, Florida. These pictures were still in Alabama though. Notice the tall buildings? The right way is heading to the Carnival Cruise Ship. I posted the pictures of the view on that side already. I mentioned in my other posts that those bildings are my favorites in this area. They stand so tall and grand. Amazing design too. That huge building by the way is the RSA Battle House Tower, the tallest building in Alabama.
Heading to the tunnel now. Remember the movie Daylight? If something like that happen in here, anybody will be trap really. Under the sea tunnel. Scary huh!
When you are at the middle of the tunnel, all radio, GPS and cellphones are dead. The tunnel is under the water/sea.
This is the exit of the tunnel. As you can see on the sign, it has an arrow that says, Battleship Park in Alabama. We will plan a trip to visit that place and I will take pictures to show you the old battle ships.
Oh, I like this view. Thanks for stopping by.

Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville Statue in Mobile Landing

Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville was a soldier, trader and founder of the French colony of Louisiana. He is a very important person in the history of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. In fact, D'Iberville in Mississippi is named after him. In 1699, he completed a fort in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. This fort was known as Fort Maurepas or Old Biloxi. This fort was destroyed long time ago but, they built a replica which was also destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
These are the buildings that I like in Mobile, Alabama. I like the view especially before the drive under the tunnel. The scenery is so wonderful.
The statue of Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville located in Mobile Landing in Alabama. The scenery in this place was huge ship docks and warehouses.
The statue of Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville standing tall. My favorite building, the RSA Battle House Tower is Alabama's tallest building and owned by Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA). It is known to be the tallest on the Gulf Coast of the United States outside of Houston, Texas. Amazing huh? I read these facts through Wikipedia.
When you stand beside the statue and look to the right, this is the view that you will see. That is the Holiday Cruise Ship and the future site of The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico.
Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville is also known as a ship captain, explorer, colonial administrator, knight of the order of Saint-Louis and an adventurer.
The statue is facing the huge warehouses.
This is the base of the statue.
The statue will be found in this park.
